Everything you need to know about Tesla Superchargers in California — what they are, how fast they charge, and what they cost.
A Tesla Supercharger is Tesla's proprietary DC fast-charging station designed to rapidly recharge Tesla vehicles — and since 2023, many other EVs using the NACS connector. Unlike a standard Level 2 home charger that adds 20–30 miles per hour, a Supercharger can add up to 200 miles of range in as little as 15 minutes.
Superchargers are placed along major highways, near shopping centres, restaurants and rest stops. California stations range from 4 to 80 stalls. There are currently three generations of hardware:
| Generation | Max Power | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| V2 | 150 kW | Older sites; power shared between stall pairs |
| V3 | 250 kW | Most common; dedicated power per stall |
| V4 | 500 kW | Newest; supports Cybertruck & future models |
Charging speed depends on the Supercharger generation, your Tesla model, battery temperature, and current state of charge.
| Version | Peak Power | Miles Added / 15 min | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| V2 Supercharger | Up to 150 kW | ~100–130 miles | Older Tesla models |
| V3 Supercharger | Up to 250 kW | ~150–200 miles | Model 3, Y, S, X |
| V4 Supercharger | Up to 500 kW | ~200–250 miles | Cybertruck, future models |
- Charging is fastest between 10%–80% battery. Above 80% the car deliberately slows charging to protect battery health.
- Cold weather can reduce charging speed by 20–40%. Use Navigate to Supercharger to pre-condition the battery before arriving.
- A typical top-up from 20% to 80% takes around 20–30 minutes on a V3 station.
California has some of the highest Supercharger prices in the US, driven by the state's elevated electricity costs. Pricing is dynamic and varies by location, time of day, and live station demand.
| Time / Condition | Typical Price / kWh | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Off-peak (late night) | $0.30 – $0.40 | Generally midnight – 7am |
| Standard / shoulder | $0.40 – $0.50 | Morning and late evening |
| Peak (busy daytime) | $0.50 – $0.75 | 8am – 10pm, high-traffic sites |
| Live surge pricing | Up to $0.75+ | Dynamic pricing at select CA sites |
- Tesla expanded live utilisation-based pricing to 550+ US sites in late 2025, including many in California.
- The price you see when you plug in is locked in for your session — it won't change mid-charge.
- Tesla Members (paying $12.99/month) get a discounted rate, typically saving $0.05–$0.10/kWh.
